Calvin Simmons Elementary Modernization
CaliChi provided civil engineering services for the modernization of the Calvin Simmons Middle School Complex in the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) System. This project included the design and construction of a new 25,000 square-foot two‐story science classroom building, artificial turf, all‐weather athletic field, as well as associated site and infrastructure upgrades.
The project also included the relocation of a city sewer main abandoned in place under a 100-year-old school building, which during the construction of a new structure on the site, was found to be still active and carrying a substantial flow. CaliChi coordinated with Oakland Unified School District and the City of Oakland to relocate the main to the North of the existing building and dedicate a formal easement to the City for maintenance.
