Sunnyvale Middle School

Modernization and New Construction

Sunnyvale Middle School is a campus modernization and new construction project in Sunnyvale, California. The project adds two new two-story classroom buildings to an existing campus, bringing 23 adaptable classrooms, five student breakout spaces, an art classroom, a teacher collaboration space, and a landscaped courtyard. Bioretention basins provide on-site stormwater capture and filtration, and solar panels are included as sustainable features. Construction is organized in three increments submitted separately to the Division of the State Architect.

Calichi served as civil engineer of record across all three increments. Our scope covered site grading and earthwork for new building pads, complete underground utility design including storm drain, sanitary sewer, domestic water, fire water, and gas systems, and fire protection water supply connections at each new building, coordinating PIV, FDC, and standpipe locations with the fire authority and DSA. Silva Cells installed beneath new paved areas support campus tree growth. A grease interceptor is included in the sanitary system, and off-site connections to City of Sunnyvale infrastructure required encroachment permitting and multiple coordination rounds with the City.

Increments 1 and 2 are in construction, with Increment 3 construction documents in progress.
