Claremont Middle School is a public middle school in Oakland, California, part of the Oakland Unified School District. The modernization project included a new multi-purpose building and full site improvements, organized into two construction increments: a sports field upgrade and a new gym and cafeteria complex.
Calichi provided civil engineering from schematic design through construction administration. Our scope covered site planning and horizontal control, grading and drainage design, demolition plans, underground utility design, and civil specifications. Stormwater work included C.3 compliance calculations, the City of Oakland Stormwater Questionnaire, a preliminary Stormwater Control Plan, and bio-treatment design using Silva Cells beneath the sports field. We also performed fire flow analysis and coordinated with PG&E on driveway and utility conflicts.
Phasing an active school campus across two increments required careful sequencing of civil drawings and stormwater documentation for each permit package. The sports field qualified for an exemption from full C.3 treatment measures, which we confirmed through schematic calculations early in design to keep the approval path clear. Construction administration continued through 2022, with RFIs addressing gas line routing around the Silva Cells and water distribution material selections.
