KIPP Bridge Academy is a two-story school building in Oakland, California, with three science classrooms and seven standard classrooms. Calichi provided civil design and engineering services spanning construction documents, Division of State Architect (DSA) approval, value engineering, and construction administration.
Our onsite scope covered site grading, utility design, and a stormwater control plan that included flow-thru planters coordinated with the structural team. For the offsite work, we prepared permit plans for City of Oakland review, resolved multiple rounds of city comments, and coordinated EBMUD requirements for backflow preventer sizing and placement alongside PG&E gas mapping. We managed the full DSA submittal and backcheck cycle, then led a value engineering effort targeting construction cost reductions while preserving the civil design intent. The project closed with construction administration: reviewing material submittals and responding to contractor RFIs through the build.
Running the city permit and DSA review tracks concurrently required careful staging. DSA backcheck comments had the potential to revise the offsite plans already in city review, so we held the fire department submittal until DSA comments cleared. Construction administration extended through 2018.
