Award Recipient for 2022 ENR Awards for K-12 Project
Fremont High School in Oakland is a high school campus that Oakland Unified School District redeveloped as a PG&E-designated Net Zero Energy facility, designed to balance on-site energy generation with total campus consumption. The project received the 2022 ENR Award for K-12 projects.
Calichi served as civil engineer of record for the modernization at 4529 Foothill Blvd, working with Hibser Yamauchi Architects. Our civil scope covered Phase 1 and Phase 2 work and included site and paving plans, grading and drainage, private and public utility design, stormwater control, erosion and sediment control, and signage and striping. We prepared two separate permit packages: a DSA submittal for the parking lot improvements and a City of Oakland Encroachment (PX) permit for off-site work within the public right-of-way. We also revised Phase 1 construction documents to add housekeeping pads for new mechanical systems.
The campus had no existing utility as-builts, so we coordinated a supplemental topographic survey and non-destructive underground utility locating before design. Dividing the modular building and parking lot into separate DSA permit packages let each phase advance on its own permitting track without one holding up the other.
